The holes you see in the snow reveal a river running underneath. One unique thing about Mt. Bohemia was the silence. It was nice and peaceful back here, with untouched snow, and no one else around. It’s not easy to find such things at most ski resorts.

Between Mt. Bohemia and Houghton, MI lies the town of Gay. The one remaining business in Gay is, of course, the Gay Bar. This seemed like a hot spot or snowmobile traffic and dudes with big trucks, among others. We went inside and I was surprised to learn that you can still smoke in bars in Michigan. Some people loved Jon’s mohawk and wanted a picture with him, but one lady seemed offended by it and asked why he was dressed that way, or something along those lines. After our quick stop in Gay on Saturday night, we went into Houghton and ate dinner. We even all fit inside the Camry wagon – all 7 of us

The biggest difference between woods in Minnesota and woods in Upper Michigan? Underbrush. I spent some time hiking, looking for water falls, hoping to see a moose, and exploring different areas of Upper MI with my mom in summer 2008. We were both surprised to see how clear the forest floor was compared to what we’re used to here in MN. I really loved the way these roots sat above the ground on these rock faces, twisting and turning.
