The Cockroach

Cockroach in Virginia, MN

This was the first cockroach I had ever seen. They seem to thrive in Virginia, MN because of the steam heating. For this reason they’re sometimes referred to as steam beetles. We saw this giant bug in the dark near a manhole. My friend yelled “whats that!”, and we all looked. It was running around really quickly until it got hit with the flash of my camera, then it laid there completely still.

A couple seconds later, I saw my second cockroach.

Unusual Noises

About a week ago my cousin Lisa and I ventured into the basement of the Coates Hotel in Virginia, MN. The hotel is still open, and Lisa used to work there about 15 years ago. Back then, it was half hotel, half assisted living. When we entered the hotel the front desk person was in the back somewhere, so we took the elevator down to the basement. We were searching for an old bar that used to be down there that had been covered in graffiti. When we came out of the elevator, we realized there was no light down the hallway. The only light source we had was the flash on my camera. I started taking pictures as we inched down the dark hallway. During one of the flashes, we noticed a sign on one of the doors. This is it. All of the doors had pad locks on them which was kind of odd. We didn’t make it too far down the hallway before turning back.  Maybe we’ll go back sometime with a flash light.

Street lights at night

Confession: I took this photo years ago.

I guess you could say I really appreciate white light. It’s really common to come across orange lights, which make everything look like it has a reddish orange tint. So when I find a nice white light, I have to capture it. These street lights are from Virginia, Minnesota.

Unfortunately, most of what I saw in Atlanta was a hotel and conference room. We were pretty far out from the city itself, and we had a pretty packed schedule. The meeting was really productive, and I’m looking forward to seeing our (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) mobile media platform develop.
